Personal Statement On Leadership And Leadership - 1226 Words

1. Leadership is about people and people are messy. Each person has their own career aspirations, personal life issues, and motivators. It is incumbent on a leader to bring the individuals together, focus their efforts on a clear objective, provide them with the necessary training and equipment to achieve the objective, and coach them along the way as needed. The hard part is motivating each individual to want to reach the objective you have laid out for them. My definition of leadership is motivating others to accomplish common objectives. 2. Obviously, I did not always see this as the definition of leadership; rather, it is a definition that I have developed over time as I reflect back on the leaders I’ve had that inspired me to set my goals higher and in line with the organization whether on a unit level or Service level. These are the leaders that when faced with a hard decision I ask myself â€Å"What would Master Chief Dewitt, Capt Roth, or BMC Gephardt do?† These are the leaders that I have tried to emulate in order to better serve my subordinates and peers in accomplishing, not only their own goals but the goals of my unit and the Coast Guard. 3. From these experiences I have developed my leadership philosophy around a few guiding principles. First- Be professional in all that you do. This does not mean just being a â€Å"master of your craft† by being the best shooter, boat driver, or armorer; rather, being a professional Coastie.
